After working as a private accountant for nearly two decades, Cheri Chumley brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to her home-based business, Accounting by Cheri.

Opening 2024 in Centralia, Accounting by Cheri serves both individuals and non-corporate businesses in a multitude of ways, from monthly bookkeeping and payroll to filing quarterly and annual taxes.

“I run the books and payroll for some local and non-local clients every month. I file quarter and annual taxes, and I’ve picked up the registration for being a tax preparer and electronic return originator,” said Chumley. “I try to provide the services that would benefit the local small business community.”

Chumley said it was the relationships with local businesses she formed during her years as a company accountant that inspired her to start her own home-based business.

“I went to Kaskaskia College and went through the AAS for accountancy. While I was doing that, I was also working full-time in the accounting department for a company,” Chumley explained. “After the degree my career excelled nicely. It put me into a great realm of private accountancy and working with a lot of local businesses. I began to develop a great report with accounting systems that locals were using.”

“Though I loved my job, I really enjoyed the relationships with local businesses and the discussion of the monthly statements,” Chumley continued. “I just saw a need where people could use help locally, especially in small businesses. That’s what I focus on in my home business.”

After two years of leading Accounting by Cheri and building a strong client-base, Chumley said she feels fortunate to be working in and for her home community.

“I feel that I am giving back to a community that has helped me keep my roots here,” she said. “It’s mutually beneficial.”
