SSM Health in Southern Illinois First in Region to Offer Advanced Seizure Detection Technology
SSM Health in Southern Illinois is enhancing neurological care for critically ill patients with the implementation of the Ceribell® System, an FDA-cleared electroencephalography (EEG) technology powered by high level computer technology.
SSM Health is the first health care provider in the region to offer this advanced technology, bringing faster seizure detection and treatment closer to home for patients across Southern Illinois.
The Ceribell System enables clinicians to rapidly assess brain activity and continuously monitor patients who may be experiencing non-convulsive seizures, a serious and often difficult-to-detect neurological emergency. By providing near real-time EEG data at the bedside, the technology helps care teams make timely treatment decisions when every minute matters.
Unlike convulsive seizures, non-convulsive seizures often occur without visible symptoms, making diagnosis challenging and potentially delaying treatment. These seizures are commonly associated with conditions such as stroke, brain injury, cardiac arrest and sepsis. Without prompt intervention, they can progress to more severe neurological complications and may increase the risk of long-term cognitive impairment and mortality.
“Bringing innovative technology to our patients is part of our commitment to providing exceptional care close to home,” said Damon Harbison, president of SSM Health Southern Illinois hospitals. “When it comes to neurological emergencies, timely diagnosis can make a significant difference in a patient’s outcome. The Ceribell System allows our care teams to quickly identify potential seizures and begin appropriate treatment sooner, helping us deliver the highest level of care for some of our most critically ill patients.”
In addition to helping accelerate diagnosis and treatment, expanded access to EEG monitoring may reduce the need for patients to be transferred to other facilities for specialized neurological assessment. By bringing this capability directly to Southern Illinois, SSM Health is strengthening access to advanced care within the communities it serves.
The implementation of Ceribell reflects SSM Health’s ongoing investment in innovative technologies that improve patient care, enhance clinical outcomes and support care teams in delivering safe, high-quality care. While the Ceribell System is not intended to replace conventional EEG monitoring, it serves as a valuable complement that expands access to timely neurological evaluation throughout the hospital.
“Through innovation and collaboration, we continue to advance the care available to patients across our region,” Harbison said. “Our investment in technologies such as Ceribell reflects our Mission-driven commitment to providing exceptional health care services and improving the health and well-being of the communities we serve.”
