Since 1998, the Keef family has continued to keep the homes and furnishings of their far-reaching client base clean, while evolving their multi-generational family business.
Founded by Jeff Keef, Jeff’s Chem-Dry has become a go-to for in-house cleanings. Having first specialized in carpet and upholstery cleanings, the business has since expanded to include the cleaning of tile, grouts and wood floors, as well as air ducts and dryer vents.”
“We are pretty much a one-stop shop for in-home cleanings,” said Justin Keef, Jeff’s son and co-owner of the business. “We got our start with carpet and upholstery, but we’ve expanded a lot from thee.”
Justin said he and his cousin Zach handle nearly all of the day-to-day operations in the field, tackling roughly three-to-five jobs per day for clients as far out as St. Clair County.
“My dad typically handles the business side of things, and he is very mechanically inclined. So, he will fix equipment if needed,” Justin explained. “Zach and I usually handle ninety-nine percent of the jobs, and we cover 13 counties. We cover Centralia, Salem and Mt. Vernon. I go down to Carbondale and Marion, and over to Fairview Heights and Belleville.”
Justin said Jeff’s Chem-Dry offers free estimates for jobs of all sizes.
“I always offer free estimates, no matter the size. I could be coming to look at one room. It doesn’t matter,” he said. “I will always give [the potentially customer] a free bid.”
Speaking on the history of the local legacy business, Justin said it all began with his father making the decision to go into business for himself.
“My dad decided to look at doing carpet cleaning,” said Justin. “He had researched a couple of different outfits, but Chem-Dry stood out the most. He checked out their operation, and almost 28 year later we’re still here.”
For his part, Justin said he got immersed into the family business during his childhood years and never looked back.
“I have been involved since I was eight years old,” Justin recalled. “I was running buffers and carpet cleaning equipment of all sorts. I’ve seen it evolve from running portable to doing truck mount cleanings. It’s been a wild ride, but it’s been fun. It’s also been great to do with my dad and to have a family business like this.”
As for the future, Justin said there is a possibility the business could be continued through the next generations of Keefs, but insisted he still has plenty of gas left in the tank.
“We have no interest of moving on to anything else. We enjoy what we do and we’re good at it,” Justin said. “I don’t see us going anywhere. Twenty years from now, I see us still cleaning and doing our thing.”
