FABCOAT BRINGS QUALITY SERVICES TO COMMUNITY

After three years of producing consistent, high-quality products for high volume customers, Fabcoat has proven itself as one of the premiere powder coating operations in southern Illinois.

Fabcoat was founded in 2021 by Greg Winn, Gary Turner and Mark Synder, after Winn and Turner retired from their previous business venture, nVent, only to land in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Gary and I started [what would become local manufacturer nVent] back in 2008. We started in Salem and ended up in Centralia. We sold the business in 2020,” Winn recalled. “COVID hit, and it was a bad time to retire. We couldn’t go anywhere, couldn’t do anything. So, we decided we needed something to do. We went back to work.”

Winn said he and Turner landed on opening a powder coating business from their past experiences with powder coating services at nVent.

“We outsourced all of our powder coating at [nVent], and we consistently had problems with lead times and quality,” Winn recalled. “So, we knew there was a demand for a good, high-quality powder coat.”

After acquiring Fabcoat’s 641 Airport Road location, Winn, Turner and Snyder expanded the building so that it could house the entirety of their high-volume operation.

According to Winn, Fabcoat’s fully automated, multi-station, conveyer system plays a crucial role in setting their product apart. Winn said the system allows them to produce both higher quality and quantity than their regional competitors.

“We invested in a system that puts together repeatable, consistent, high quality [results,” Winn said. “We need workers to load and unload. Aside from that, everything is fully automated.”

Another unique service of Fabcoat’s is the company’s ability to not only powder coat products but create them. Winn said Fabcoat began fabricating its own select products after receiving requests from customers.

“With the background that we have, coming from the cable trade business, a couple of customers came to us and asked if we had the ability to fabricate brackets and piece parts,” Winn said. “Obviously, a powder coater makes money when they’re powder coating. But if we can manufacture the bracket for the customers, we kind of get two bits of the apple.”

Roughly three years in, Winn said Fabcoat enjoys a healthy workload from trusted customers, and has no designs on slowing down.

“We are very busy here. Not only on the powder coating side, but also on the fabrication side,” Winn said. “It’s gone very well.”
